Leaving your dog for the first time or even the first few times is much akin to sending your firstborn to school on the first day. It is nerve-wracking and exciting for everyone involved. Having witnessed this many times over, CCR has compiled a suggested packing list so nothing important is forgotten. But, rest assured, anything forgotten will gladly be provided at the bunkhouse.
Most times, the parents are far more worried than the fur-kid. In order to allow your pup to get acclimated, we encourage you to visit (even more than once!) and just walk around to get familiar with the surroundings. Day care stays and even overnights before a big stay are encouraged as well.
While this will comfort your dog, the CCR staff knows that dog-parents will still worry. So, feel free to call (even everyday!) we can give you an update on your dog, who they are playing with, how they are eating and anything else you'd like to know. Also, we are more than happy to e-mail you some pictures of your baby "in action" with their new friends.
Suggestions on what to bring
Please note, if you have to limit your pet's 'luggage' when he/she is dropped off by you or picked up by our van, we'd be happy to supply your dog with any of the things on this list.
- Food
- We provide Eukanuba Adult Chicken and Lamb Flavors and Science Diet Sensitive Stomach. We’re happy to feed your dog from our supply if this is what they eat.
- It is not advisable to switch your dog's food on his or her arrival to CCR just to save on having to send it. Upset stomachs and uncomfortable dogs happen this way.
- If your pooch is a picky eater, feel free to send any extras. We supply American cheese, chicken, white rice and Parmesan cheese as a mix-in if any dogs are reluctant to eat.
- Bed
- We have a variety of fluffy pillows, beds, sheepskin mats, and blankets. If you feel your dog will be more comfortable in his or her own bed from home, (and it is smaller than a twin mattress) send it along! If not, don't worry; the girls at CCR are professionals at making fluffy, comfortable sleeping quarters.
- Toys
- Favorite toys, stuffed animals, tennis balls, chew things etc. are more than welcome. We do our best to return everything, and it helps us out a lot if things are labeled (when possible). If items cannot be labeled, it is equally helpful to have a 'packing list' of what came with your dog; that way everything can be gathered and sent home.
- Again, please refrain from excessive packing (12 tennis balls, a menagerie of stuffed animals, a small pet store etc.) as we have plenty of toys to keep your pup occupied. We can even let you know if he or she finds a new favorite plaything.
- Old, slept-in t-shirt, sweatshirt, sock etc.
- This article of clothing will smell like you, the most valued person in your dog’s world! We have found that many times this is a great comfort to the dogs. Please try to label any article with an initial, at least. (You would not believe the inundation of white t-shirts we get!) And keep in mind, your smelly shirt may be subject to puppy-teething or shredding by your very own fur-child.
- Treats
- If your pooch goes crazy for Flossies, Greenies, Milkbones, or even carrots or apples, send some along! Your pup will definitely appreciate the late-night snack after being tucked in at night walk. Also, if too much of a good thing will make your dog sick, let us know and we'll use them sparingly.
- Again, if you don’t bring any, we will not deny any puppy-dog eyes; we always have extra treats on hand.
- Medications
- Antibiotics, supplements, and other medications (including wipes, ear drops and eye drops) will gladly be administered. Include clear instructions (amount, frequency and times given) and rest assured that your pup will be well cared for.
- Injections will be given at an extra charge.
- Also, if you routinely clean your dog's ears or eyes, let us know; we can continue the routine. Everyone at CCR understands how important it is to stay on top of doggie maintenance.
- Emergency Information
- Your cell phone numbers and e-mails are fine but it is advisable to leave the information for a contact person who will be nearby (Especially if you are traveling abroad). No need to worry though, this is a 'just in case' precaution and is rarely used. Should your dog need to receive emergency care, we have a veterinarian and an emergency clinic open on holidays just minutes down the road. In this event, our primary concern is that your pet receives the necessary care. Once we tend to him or her we will be sure to contact you right away and give you necessary updates.
Things to leave behind
- Food/Water Bowls
- We use our own stainless steel, dishwasher-safe bowls. So, in most cases, your dog's bowls can stay home (we wouldn't want to lose them!)
- Extra leashes/collars
- Upon arrival we pack your dog's leash (and sometimes collar/choke) in a Zip-Loc bag and label it so it doesn't get lost. We use our own earth-friendly leads and Martingale collars. We realize that many dogs wear expensive collars, so we wouldn't want anything to happen to them.
- Large food containers
- We have limited space in our kitchen. So, large Rubbermaid containers, oversized tins, and the like are an inconvenience. They are perfectly acceptable for extra-long stays; otherwise we would greatly appreciate if you send your dog's food in a more convenient container. (Even the dog food bag itself is more readily stored... we promise to return the extra!)
